On July 1, 2000, Vermont's historic civil union law took effect.
This law was created after the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that
the state's marriage laws were discriminatory against gay and lesbian couples.
The Court handed the job of correcting this injustice to the Vermont Legislature and,
for better AND worse, after four months of work, civil union was established.

This photo/essay compilation contains the images and written reflections of people
who were instrumental in the passage of this legislation. From the plaintiffs and attorneys who brought the case to the Supreme Court, to the politicians who were responsible for the legislative process, to the wide variety of Vermont citizens who volunteered their resources to fight for the right for gay and lesbian couples to marry, many different perspectives and experiences are contained in this collection.

While Vermont was in the forefront of the fight for same-sex marriage rights,
and was only able to achieve civil union, there is much to appreciate and learn about this process. As other states proceed with this important work, their citizens
will benefit greatly from the insights contained within this collection.

Creating Civil Union: Opening Hearts and Minds is a beautiful keepsake
depicting this amazing historical achievement, a powerful teaching tool,
and a unique and thoughtful gift that blends art with activism.
It is a "must have" for those concerned with civil rights for all people!
